In January, we launched the Indivisible REI Illinois group to organize a series of eight meetings in 2022 to address the collective challenges we face in creating an antiracist society and how we as individuals become more empowered through shared language, self-reflection, and a commitment to make a change.

At our last meeting, we briefly touched on the purpose and power of solidarity within a movement. We will continue to explore what it will take for all of us, especially those who are on the margins, to get what we need not only to survive but to thrive. Our next meeting is on May 4, 2022. The urgency of intersectionality

Now more than ever, it’s important to look boldly at the reality of race and gender bias — and understand how the two can combine to create even more harm. Kimberlé Crenshaw uses the term “intersectionality” to describe this phenomenon; as she says, if you’re standing in the path of multiple forms of exclusion, you’re likely to get hit by both. In this moving talk, she calls on us to bear witness to this reality and speak up for victims of prejudice.
