Chicago, ILLINOIS — Indivisible Illinois, a grassroots coalition dedicated to protecting democracy, applauds the Illinois members of Congress, both Democratic and Republican, who voted Wednesday, January 13, 2021, to impeach Donald Trump for engaging in high crimes and misdemeanors by inciting violence against the Government of the United States.
“To do anything less,” says Scott Cross of Indivisible Springfield and Co-State Coordinator, Indivisible Illinois, “would have been to condone Trump’s incitement to riot, to condone sedition, and to approve of the near destruction of our democracy itself.”
We look forward to the upcoming Senate trial and are hopeful that Senators Duckworth and Durbin will vote to convict and remove President Trump, and disqualify him from ever holding federal office again.
A January 10 ABC/Ipsos poll, however, shows that 61% of Republicans believe that Trump did nothing wrong, and a January 11 Vox poll finds that 72% of likely Republican voters continue to question the presidential election results. More than a third say they no longer trust our electoral process.
Indivisible Illinois therefore commits to continue the hard work of educating all voters about what it means to conduct safe and fair elections, and what our democracy requires of both the winning and losing candidates in any local, state, or national election. It also commits to continue pressing forward with its advocacy of the voter reforms needed in our state to increase voter turnout and decrease politically motivated voter suppression. This includes promoting universal use of ballot drop boxes and mail-in voter registration.
“Voting is a fundamental right and core to our democracy. It is of utmost importance to hold all of our elected officials accountable to their oath of office and to the voters that they represent,” says Rose Colacino, Indivisible Illinois Election Integrity & Security and Voters’ Rights Lead. “The impeachment of Donald Trump is a rejection of his attempt to suppress the will of the people.”
Indivisible Illinois is a grassroots coalition dedicated to protecting democracy by ensuring safe and fair elections, and holding elected officials to their oath to represent all constituents fairly.
