Chicago, ILLINOIS —Indivisible Groups across Illinois announce their support of the Democratic state representatives vowing not to support Michael J. Madigan for Speaker of the Illinois House, citing an urgent need for new leadership.
According to a statement Jan. 10, 2021 by 19 Democrats, the tipping point for them was not only the Commonwealth Edison bribery scheme that has ensnared Madigan, but especially the November 18 indictment of longtime Madigan confidant Michael McClain on federal bribery charges.
“We have a grassroots movement ready to support these Democrats in their efforts to bring fresh leadership to the Illinois House,” says Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth, Co-state Coordinator of Indivisible Illinois. “The time is now to end the status quo.”
Calls for replacing Madigan have been going on for years, adds Manaa-Hoppenworth. “It’s time for our representatives to listen to their constituents. We need new leadership now.”
Indivisible Illinois is a grassroots coalition dedicated to protecting democracy by ensuring safe and fair elections, and holding elected officials to their oath to represent all constituents fairly.
